Mawson, homage to the viticulturist’s dad.

The Cubby
Constructed of locally sourced materials, the exterior is clad in blackbutt timber with black trims, to immerse in the environment of dark stemmed wattles and gum trees.

The interior palette of yellows, greens and browns is designed to reflect the colours of the surrounding bush and seasonal leaves in the vineyard. A nod to the classic Australian landscape.

Mawson features a shower which opens directly onto the deck and textured tiles to give the feeling of walking on the bush floor. A dedicated bedroom space with sweeping views over the native garden and vineyard can be found at the end of the timber clad cathedral hallway.

A kitchenette and large benchseat form the lounge area, with large sliding doors and windows to bring the outside in.

The Name
“Mawson” has many connection to Neil’s father, Peter McGregor. He was an original shareholder in Yass River Vineyard, which started out growing grapes on this land. But Fiona became interested in winemaking, and Yarrh Wines was born.

Peter was a geophysicist by trade, mainly looking at seismic and magnetic observations. As part of his job, he spent 1956 over-wintering at the Mawson base in Antarctica, travelling to and from Nella Dan. Peter also built the family home in Mawson, after moving from Perth.
